4 years

In my previous column I wrote how everyone should watch the Senior Bowl this weekend to see Chris Leak one last time and his dynamite spirals. Well Saturday rolled around and I was planning to do just that but as it turns out it wasn't on TV up in Canada and so I missed it. Apparently by all accounts of the game and the statistics I didn't miss much. Now looking back I'm kind of glad I missed it. I want to remember Leak in the Florida blue and Orange winning the National Championship, not in a crummy all star game trying to audition for the NFL.

It's weird how fast time flies by and one more reminder of this is the college career of Chris Leak. Seems like a couple of months ago I was reading how the Gators signed the number one high school recruit in the country and remember thinking that a couple of National Championships were in the bag. Everyone thought this way, Leak was practically the most dominating high school quarterback in memory breaking all of the passing records and winning the State Championship at Independence high in North Carolina. From the first game I watched him he became my guy. From the way he used to jump up and down as Freshman before going into play to the aforementioned tight spirals. He always seemed to play with an enthusiasm that the current QB (Ingle Martin) didn't have. Even though his freshman year was not outstanding in the wins and losses department it didn't matter. We had found our QB of the future.

Then a weird thing happened or slowly happened. Sophomore year his numbers were better but the wins losses stayed the same. Slowly you could see that enthusiasm start to disappear and all the pressure seemed to get to him.

Junior year came around and brought a new coach and a new system so a decline in stats was understandable but there was still too many losses. By this time he just seemed old and wore down. Word was that he was distant from his teammates and that he couldn't succeed in the new system. In three years he went from the best quarterback prospect in the country to a player that was replaceable because an offensive system took precedent.

When senior year started it was a reversal of fortunes. There was a new QB recruit who was the best prospect in the country (Tim Tebow) who had a great enthusiasm and who the fans all loved. Still my alliances fell and still fall with Leak. Must have been tough to give everything to a school for three years only to see everybody embrace a True Freshman when three years ago you were a better prospect than he was. But it all worked out in the end. Leak has the Florida passing records, the national championship and the respect. Even though I'm excited for the Tim Tebow era it's still a shame I won't ever be able to watch Leak play for Florida anymore. A feeling I'm sure many of you go through with your favorite college players. Four years or even less in many cases goes by very quickly. So my advice to everyone at Ohio State and Texas is to watch as many games as possible because Oden and Durant aren't going to be around much longer. Maybe its a good thing so that we don't take for granted what we have like the Colts with Manning but I would kill to be able to watch him play for one more year.

Non Super Preview

Big weekend coming up and not in the way your thinking. This is the preview week where everybody gets to see what weekends are going to be like without football. Yup a preview of the worst time period of the whole year for sports, Luckily march madness will rescues us from the abyss followed by Baseball starting up and the NBA playoffs. Sure there are some things to watch in the interim like regular season NBA games and college basketball games or even the NHL if your into that sort of thing. There's also lots of important things I could be doing like trying to get that co-op placement or putting in some extra time studying, but let's be real. The NHL sucks, it's too cold to go outside and studying is overrated. So here's an unofficial list of the best things to do this weekend and the period of post Superbowl pre march madness.

1. Read a book. No seriously there's nothing as uncool as an illiterate.

2. Workout. Might as well get an early start on that beach body instead of the normal mid April frenzy.

3. Read The Lancer blog. Actually this is a good idea at all points of the year

4. Research stocks. Very time consuming but also rewarding

5. Sleep in. Something tells me I don't have to prod you to do this one.

6. Start a dynasty in either Madden or in NCAA college football. You'll be surprised how much this consumes your life

7. Email Bill Simmons (ESPN's the Sports Guy) to write more columns.

8. Watch Kevin Durant carry a young Texas team

9. Watch Chris Leak in the Senior Bowl. Trust me he won't be a starter in the NFL so this may be your last chance to watch the prettiest passes you'll ever see. I've saw him play at Florida for four years and I don't think I've ever seen him throw anything but a perfect spiral.

10. Watch a Phoenix Suns game. You can thank me later.

11. Read up on the NFL draft. One of my favorite sporting events of the year and I don't really know why considering most of the first round picks will just be serviceable pros or busts. But for whatever reason I get an inordinate amount of excitement from this.

12. Bank some quality time with the lady friend because you're going to need it with interest come March Madness.

Just realized how much this column sounded like a men's health article which isn't a bad thing but I'll apologize anyway.

The View from Here

All my column titles kinda suck and when I say kinda I mean they are absolutely awful, this one being no exception although to be fair this one is an Everybody Loves Raymond rip off. (Robert's name for his column when he was in grade school) So what is my point you ask? Well I think I'm going to make this a running feature maybe once or twice a month where it just some off the cuff thoughts from a previous sporting event with no real format or anything. How is this any different from what I was already doing you ask? Well it's not really, but I feel like I need a running column title. Anyway this columns thoughts are on what else, the NFL conference championships.

  • I went 0-2 last week and am now not even .500 for the playoffs. What can I say? Turns out it's harder than it looks. I like the fact that I still write my picks like your an idiot to think the opposite of what I do even though you'd have a better record than me.

  • I'm so happy that the Patriots lost. I was just about ready to vomit when they took a 21-3 lead. Life was almost not worth living if the Patriots won 4 championships in 6 years. I don't even like the Colts and will be cheering hard for the Bears but it was definitely a case of the lesser of two evils.

  • My favorite moment of the game was when just after the Colts won Jim Nantz says something like "They said that Peyton Manning couldn't win the big one but..." then stopping himself after realizing that he still hasn't won the big one.

  • Sure seemed to me like the Colts were celebrating like this was their Super Bowl and how can you blame them? Defeating their arch rival and top dog was a huge win, but I wonder if there will be let down in the Super Bowl. My gut says no just because there is the bye week in between. Without that bye week though I'd be tempted to take the Bears no matter what the line in Vegas was.

  • Seriously what is the Patriots diet. Vrabel and Dillon looked like a combined 600 lbs and there punter Sauerbrun really needs to take that previous steroids suspension seriously (his arms were as big as my head). I mean has anyone ever been suspended for steroids just looking at them. Wait I don't want to finish that thought I might give Major League Baseball some ideas.

  • Another enjoyable moment was when Belicheck gave Manning the cold shoulder at the end of the game. Looks like Tomlinson was right all along and proves my theory that coaches who dress like bums are bums.

  • Nice time for Reggie Bush to start doing elaborate end zone celebrations. How that game work out for you?

  • Quit blaming Reche Caldwell and blame the real problem, Tom Brady

Conference Championships

Just a few thoughts this week from last weeks games before I get into this weeks.

Colts VS Ravens
  • Wow how many bad playoff games can Manning have? I'm setting the over/under at 1000. I really don't know what it is but it definitely is eerie. Other than when he plays the Broncos he's a disaster. This isn't new either, he never won the big game at Tennessee and the year after he left they went undefeated and won the National Championship with Tee Martin at QB (yes Tee Martin). I'm not sure on this but I'm guessing he didn't win his State championship in high school either
  • How exciting is it to watch Ed Reed? This guy is just all over the field. I remember when he came out of Miami he didn't have the great measurables and slipped to the late part of the first round but his ball skills are incredible. He nearly picked off Manning four times and that one pick where he lateraled it while falling out of bounds. How could they whistle that play dead? Reed's a playmaker and one of my top three favorite defensive players to watch.

Eagles VS Saints

  • Enough about Reggie Bush, Deuce is the better back and he showed that last week, give him more air time discussion
  • Next year when McNabb's is back the Eagles need to realize that it's now Westbrook's team. That's the only way they're going to progress as a team.

Chargers VS Patriots

  • This game only adds to my resentment for the Patriots and Enemy number one is now Vrabel taking the spot away from Brady who took the spot from Bruschi. I'm pretty sure this guys favorite thing is to rip off the celebration of other teams. From TO when he was with the Eagles to Merriman. I really shouldn't get this upset about someone I've never met.
  • Once again the stars align perfectly for the Pats to win. Bad gameplan by the Chargers (not giving LT the ball enough), Improbable plays (the interception followed by the strip) and bad coaching moves (Challenging that play and waisting a timeout)
  • If the purpose NFL games was to underthrow receivers Tom Brady would be the MVP.

Seahawks VS Bears

  • Just leave it to Grossman (a Florida Gator) to get the job done.

On to the picks (last week 1-3 overall 4-4) (Home team in bold)

Saints VS Bears (-2.5)

Winner: Saints

There's no way the Bears defence can contend with all of Brees' weapons. Last week they give up 24 points to a struggling hawks team. Unless Grossman makes it rain two weeks in a row bye bye Bears.

Patriots VS Colts (-3)

Winner: Patriots

For the reasons listed above. The only solace I can take is that the Patriots have four Florida Gator WR including the dynamic duo of Gaffney and Caldwell who along with Grossman as QB was a better team than the current National championship team. I realize this has nothing to do with anything but I hate writing positive things about the Pats.

Roid Rage

Even though I’m a little late on the subject I feel I need to give my opinion on the topic. What is the topic? Well its steroids and more specifically Mark McGuire’s not making the hall of fame.

So why does everybody care that baseball players use steroids? There are generally two answers put forward. One is that it is against the rules and the other is that because baseball is such a statistical game it is unfair to compare players from the past to the players of the present.

First things first steroids is against the rules and players should not be using it and should be disciplined if they are ever caught using it. Other players however also cheat. From pitchers throwing spit balls to players using corked bats and no one has ever disallowed them from making the hall of fame because of it.

The second argument of how it is unfair to players of the past. Well I’ve got news for everybody there’s new weight lifting supplements coming out every year that are perfectly legal and safe that older generation players never had, just check out www.bodybuilding.com. There’s better nutrition information, better training methods and better medical procedures than in the past and this is a good thing. We’ve made technical advances as a society; we’re bigger, stronger and faster. Oh yeah there was also steroid use happening in the seventies so that era isn’t clean either.

Now specifically to the case of Mark McGuire. His numbers are clearly worthy of being a first ballot hall of fame player and he wasn’t voted in because there is suspicion that he used steroids. That's right suspicion. Absolutely no proof whatsoever. In a country that preaches innocent until proven guilty they are certainly letting him hang out to dry.

Let it be shown that other players have actually tested positive for steroids and don’t receive a hundredth of the bad press that he does. Let it also be shown that players like Shawne Merriman test positive for steroids and then are voted to the all pro team probably by the same reporters who refuse to vote McGuire into the hall of fame. Before we all crucify McGuire and Sosa and Bonds I think we need to take a look at the big picture and not view everything in a vacuum. Reporters need to get off their high horse and stop trying to protect something that was never theirs in the first place.

The Sequal

So the second week of the NFL playoffs and just like the first I'm bucking my recent trend and am going to run the full gauntlet. That's right, pregame, games, post games, the whole kit and caboodle. I don't even care that I have homework and am way behind in my class readings. It's time to prioritize and focus on what's really important.

With that being said there's a couple of things I think are needed to make the NFL viewing experience a little better.

1. CBS needs to do all games in HD. Bill Simmons (my favourite sports writer) wrote about this a few weeks ago and it cannot be reiterated enough. It's 2007, I have a television that my dad purchased in 2002 thats HD compatible. Now that I've seen HD it's ruined me from standard definition and I refuse to go back.

2. One suggestion I wish they would consider: try showing the game from a Madden camera angle (where the camera is directly behind the QB) it could pan back after the snap so we could all watch exactly how the QB sees it. As a QB myself and a avid video game player I can't see how this wouldn't work.

3. Ed Hoculi needs to ref every game and also do it in a cut off jersey.

Before I get onto the picks there was a rather large error from last weeks predictions. I wrote that the NYG defensive line was better than the Eagles because of Mike Strahan and it turns out he was on the injured reserve. I don't know what I was thinking and all I can give you is my sincerest apologies I promise to do better. Now onto the picks (Home teams in bold)

Colts VS Ravens (-4)
Winner: Ravens
It sure seems like we've been down this road before wondering if Manning has turned the corner and whether this is the year. I'll let you in a little hint. It's not.

Eagles VS Saints (-5)
Winner: Saints
Strictly based on my Jeff Garcia isn't good theory and oh yeah the Eagles best cornerback is injured against the NFL's leading passer playing at home and in a dome.

Seahawks VS Bears (-8.5)
Winner: Seahawks
The spread is just too big. Being a Florida Gators fan I refuse to bad mouth Rex Grossman (he was robbed of the Heisman in 2001 by the way) but the possibility of this ending badly just seems obscenely high. Not to mention the fact that the Bears D has been living mainly on reputation the past few weeks.

Patriots VS Chargers (-5)
Winner: Chargers
I don't care about the Charger's coach playoff winning percentage or Rivers' inexperience. The Chargers are clearly the better team. This feels a lot like the early nineties when the Niners passed the torch to the younger and more talented Cowboys. Hopefully we can all collectively stick a fork in the Patriots dynasty.

The Week that Was

What a week for a sports fan. From the first of January to eigth is the best week of sports not involving march madness. OK it's technically 8 days and not seven but just look at what we were able to digest.
  • 6 New Year's day bowl games including the college football game of the season.
  • Several others including the way better than expected international bowl.
  • NFL playoffs (told you Romo wasn't good)
  • regular season NBA games
  • regular season NHL games
  • World Junior Hockey championship.

Yes it was a great week capped off by my favorite team the Florida Gators destroying the higher ranked Buckeyes. All of this plus great weather up here in southern Ontario plus no school equals good times.

The one thing that bothered me though was people saying how the Boise State, Oklahoma game was the best BCS game of all time and that Boise State deserved to play for the National Championship instead of Florida.

First of all shouldn't we wait a few months before declaring this the best game of all time. I mean it was entertaining but lets let those memories stew for awhile. Declaring the Boise State game the greatest BCS game of all time this early is like having a girlfriend on the first day of Frosh week. Not a good idea at all. So after much contemplation I will give you my top 5 BCS bowl games.

5. 1999 Orange Bowl
Michigan 35 Alabama 34
Started slowly but kept building. Gets bonus points for having two future NFL studs in Brady (Michigan) and Alexander (Alabama) not to mention other solid pros like Chris Sameuls. But ultimately I had to deduct points because Michigan won and I hate Tom Brady.

4. 2004 Rose Bowl
Texas 38 Michigan 37
Vince Young's coming out party, two great historical teams, entertaining from start to finish.

3. 2007 Fiesta Bowl
Boise State 43 Oklahoma 42
The greatest final 5 minutes and overtime but lets be real. It wasn't for the championship and the first three quarters weren't that great.

2. 2005 Rose Bowl
Texas 41 Southern California 38
Star players, heisman trophy winners, historical teams, great ending, two undefeated teams playing for the Championship and entertaining throughout

1. 2002 Fiesta Bowl
Ohio State 31 Miami 24
You could put the 2005 Rose Bowl here but the 2002 Fiesta Bowl is my personal favorite. You've got two historical teams both undefeated. The great freshman tailback Clarett who was never the same again. McGahee's injury, the questionable pass interference call, not to mention two loaded teams. To me this hasn't been topped.

Now on to the other question of whether Boise State deserves to play in the National Championship and I just have four words. Are you kidding me? You really want to open the door for undefeated mid major teams who don't beat a single team in the top 25 into the National Championship? Just look at Boise's schedule. Other than the bowl game they didn't play anyone other than Hawaii who ended up ranked in the top 25. If they would schedule some good non-conference games then I'd be more willing to consider but for now no way. If that happened then all of the major conference schools would schedule nothing but cupcake non conference games. Remember those early season Texas, Ohio State games. Yup those would be a thing of the past because it would be too great a risk to lose that and have a team like Boise State with a cupcake schedule jump them in the standings. The system is already messed up. Don't mess it up more.

Playoffs

The NFL playoffs start Saturday and I have to admit I'm not really that excited. This baffles me since just two years ago and every year before that this was a marquee moment in my year right up there with the college bowl season and Christmas morning and only slightly behind march madness and the end of the school year. I would like many of you devour hours upon hours of football watching a full two hours of NFL countdown followed by the one o'clock and then the four o'clock games and then NFL primetime and then the Sunday night game. Needless to say not a lot got done. This was before I had digital cable and the only games I would get were the always depressing Buffalo Bills or the team du jour on Fox. Now I cut out the pregame and highlight shows completely and will watch only parts of games unless I'm really interested in the match-up in which case I'll watch the whole game.

So what happened? you ask. Well the main thing is I went to University and I became way more busy. Since I was playing football on Saturdays they were a wash and I could no longer afford to have a completely unproductive Sunday as well. Once my football season was over I wanted to get back into it but I found myself getting bored watching non-stop football. I never thought that last sentence would ever come true and I don't know if I'm changing or if it's just a reflection on our ADD North American lifestyle whatever it is I want to go back to the way I used to be so tomorrow and Sunday are going to be a throwback to the old days. Pregame, actual games and postgame, bring 'em on.

On to the picks (home team in bold)

Chiefs VS Colts (-7)
Pick: Colts
The Chiefs are horrendous on the road and even though the Colts are awful against the run I'm pretty sure LJ aged 10 years this season. Also I don't really like that Jay-Z inspired dynasty sign after touchdowns. I think the league should force him to carry on basketball Larry Johnson's celebration of making an "L" with his arms. Also I've been told that Peyton Manning can throw the ball well.

Cowboys VS Seahawks (-2.5)
Pick: Seahawks
Even though I like the Cowboys I feel I need to bring it to every ones attention that Tony Romo is in fact not good. He will cost them the game and leave everyone wondering how did this guy make the pro bowl? I also like the Seahawk crowd to distract TO.

Giants VS Eagles (-7)
Pick: Giants
Speaking of QB's who aren't good there's two of them playing in this one. Let's break this game down.
QB: Manning VS Garcia (evenly bad)
RB: Westbrook VS Barber (slight edge to Barber)
WR: Plaxico, Shockey VS Brown, Stallworth (Giants)
OL: no idea
DL: Strahan ('nuff said)
LB: even
DB: eagles

so how does this equal a 7 point spread?

Jets VS Patriots (-8.5)
Pick: Patriots
I loathe the Patriots but you're fooling yourself if you think they lose here.

The Beginning

So I must be about the billionth person to start their own blog and the odds of me actually getting significant readers has got to be worse than the odds that Royals win the world series, but just like the Royals and many of you I will give it a shot anyway.

I might as well start with a little background info on me. Currently I'm in my second year of University and while I find my major interesting (finance) the thought of getting a job in it for the next thirty or more years scares me more than anything else. In a little over two years I'm going to have to have a full time job and be an adult. All of the possibilities that were present just a few years ago will be gone as I settle in on an ordinary life. It's a sobering thought and something I'm not ready to give into yet. My entire life I was told that I could do anything that I set my mind to and after giving everything I had into playing football in the summer of 2002 I realized that I was never going to be a professionally athlete. I felt like everyone lied to me. Since then every year the seemingless endless possibilities started to dwindle away slowly. When the ball dropped ending 2006 and ringing in 2007 more of life's opportunities passed me by and my youth was definitely slipping away into adulthood. So what I want to do with my life I'm not entirely sure but a nine to five job isn't it. I'm definitely lost right now and hopefully I can figure it out before its too late.

Anyway the blog I feel will be a step in the right direction. It will probably be mostly about sports but who knows and I guarantee that this will be the most depressing column I'll ever write. From here on out hopefully I'll be able to entertain readers and make it a daily site to check out. You can expect one to two columns a week maybe three if I'm not busy and feeling frisky. Feel free to email me at anytime and I got to believe that this will be a war of attrition. If I stick at this long enough eventually sometime and someplace, someone will pay me to do this.
